Black Sea Submarine Power Cable Project
According to Romanian publication point.md, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Romanian power transmission system operator Transelectrica and Georgian State Electrosystem (GSE), the Black Sea submarine power cable project has entered the technical preparation stage.
The project envisages laying a high-voltage power transmission cable on the Black Sea bed, which will enable direct transmission of electricity between Georgia and Romania and contribute to the creation of a new energy corridor towards the European Union.
According to Transelectrica, this is one of the most important energy initiatives for the region, and the signing of the memorandum is a prerequisite for the start of practical work on creating the infrastructure.
The project plans to install both a high-voltage power transmission line and digital communication infrastructure between Anaklia, Georgia, and Constanta, Romania.
The total length of the planned infrastructure is 1,155 kilometers. Of this, 1,115 kilometers will pass along the Black Sea bed, and 40 kilometers will be located on land. The design capacity of the transmission line is 1,300 megawatts.
According to the Romanian side, the implementation of the project will enable the country to integrate more closely with the European energy system, access additional sources of electricity, strengthen energy security, and integrate renewable energy more widely. Romania's role in Europe's energy infrastructure will also significantly increase.
